MISTIC SEAS 2: Project to promote the application of the Marine Strategies in Macaronesia

Friday, 1 July, 2016

The MISTIC SEAS 2 project "Application of a coherent and coordinated sub regional approach to monitoring and evaluation of marine biodiversity in Macaronesia for the second cycle of the Framework Directive on Marine Strategies MSFD" is the continuation of the MISTIC SEAS project. The first part of the project worked on a methodology for monitoring the biodiversity descriptor in the Macaronesia sub-region, focusing on the populations of three functional groups of species shared among the archipelagos of this sub-region (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands).

MISTIC SEAS 2, which is part of the second cycle of the Marine Strategies Framework Directive (DMEM), aims to implement the methodologies designed in the first part of the project, and coordinate their development through the implementation of joint programs of monitoring, in which the necessary data will be gathered in order to determine the environmental status of the waters and marine mammals, turtles and seabirds in the Macaronesia.

The project, which will be implemented from March 2017 to March 2019, has a total budget of 1.3 million euros and 80% co-financing from the European Commission.
